Irish music is music that has been created in Ireland. The indigenous music is called Irish traditional music. During the years it has developed a strong connection to music influences from Britain and the United States but Irish traditional music has kept many of its own elements and has been influenced many forms of music such as country and roots music in the United States, which have had some influence on modern rock music, as well. Rock and roll, punk rock, and other genres have been fused with Irish Music as well.

The history of Irish music reaches back to Gregorian chants in the Middle Ages, choral and harp music of the Renaissance, court music of the Baroque and early Classical period and many Romantic, late Romantic and twentieth-century modernist music. Anima Keltia is an artist that plays Celtic harp  and is representative of this style of Irish and Celtic music.

The Main Irish instruments are Flute, Fiddle, Tin Whistle, Low Whistle, Uilleann Pipes, Accordion, Concertina, Bodhrán and Harp. Nowadays however, Guitar, Bouzouki, Mandolin, Banjo, Harmonica and Piano are commonly used in Irish music. A band like Alban Fùam uses Bodhrán and acoustic guitar whereas a band like Patricks  produces traditional Irish music with the help of modern instruments such as Drums and electric Bass.

A category of Irish Traditional music is that of Irish Drinking Songs (Irish Drinking Music). Get an authentic Irish pub experience by grabbing a pint of Guinness or a dram of Irish whiskey, and sing along to some Irish trad with your fellow pub patrons. While almost any Irish song makes for an excellent drinking song, there are a few that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Here, the essential Irish drinking songs for the best bout of craic: “Beer, Beer, Beer”, “Black Velvet Band”, “Seven Drunken Nights”, “The Holy Ground”, “Lily the Pink”, “Old Dun Cow (MacIntyre!)”, “The Orange and the Green”, “Come Out Ye Black and Tans, “Whiskey you’re the Devil”, “Rattlin’ Bog”, “Johnny at the Door”, “Finnegan’s Wake”, “Johnny Jump Up”, “Whiskey in the Jar”, “Wild Rover”, “A Begging I Will Go (An English Folk Song)”, “Health to the Company”, “Drunken Sailor”.

The term Celtic music is often applied to the music of Scotland and Ireland because both lands have created well-known particular styles which have a lot in common and mutual influences. The definition of Celtic Music may be complicated because of the Irish independence which has allowed Ireland to promote ‘Celtic’ music as an Irish product. Celtic styles are known because of the importance of Irish and Scottish people in the English speaking countries, in particular in the United States, where they have had a profound influence on American music: in bluegrass and country music.

The music of Wales, Cornwall, Brittany, the Isle of Man, Cantabria, Galicia and Asturias (in Spain) and Portugal can be considered Celtic music. Some older forms of Celtic music that are so rare in Scotland and Ireland nowadays are still common in the Maritimes. The music of this region is Celtic celebrates the sea, seafaring and fishing.

Ireland, Wales, Scotland, Brittany and Cornwall have living roots of language and music. Breton artist Alan Stivell was one of the earliest musicians to use the word Celtic and Keltia in his productions, beginning in the 1960s as part of the worldwide folk music revival with the term quickly catching on with other artists.
